While many casino patrons believe that a machine that has gone long without paying out is due to hit soon, this is not true. The fact is that the probability of hitting a particular symbol on a reel is influenced by other factors, including the other symbols on the payline and the number of previous hits. In addition, the weighting of the various symbols on a reel increases with each spin. As a result, the chances of hitting a high-paying symbol on the first or second reel are significantly lower than on the third or fourth. This is the reason why it is so important to play only the maximum number of coins available on a machine. It is never wise to gamble more than you can afford to lose. A casino’s management will always take these factors into account and will adjust the payout system accordingly. Even so, there are no guarantees that you will win.
